Both Pinker and Lehrer believe that science and art influence each other. Art is often thought of the lesser when compared to science, but both of these writers write that science helps the arts and the arts influence science as well. Pinker shares “the promise of science is to enrich and diversify the intellectual tools” (3). Science in this sense takes on a supporting role to other intellectual tools such as the arts. Lehrer feels in a similar sense science and art is intertwined “science and the arts will truly impact each other” (7). This supports Pinker and his ideas on science being important, but also how science cannot stand alone. Science emerged as a forefront to our knowledge, everything in the last century has been fast paced on a science track and what is missing is the connection to the arts.
The arts are a broad category that include music, dance, and poetry, just as broad as science as well. Although they work well by themselves, combining the arts with the science works best for comprehending both intellects. Pinker states “the acquisition of knowledge is hard. The world does not go out of its way to reveal its workings” (5). Science helps reveal the workings of the world, but art reveals the workings of how us humans live within the world. To separate the arts from science its easy to see the greater importance of science, science over shadows art in everyday life. The arts are needed though to help show the science in a more comprehensible way.
I love the quote you selected from Pinker. It paired well with Lehrer’s point. I do want to encourage you to work with slightly longer quotes (in general, although the occasional short quote is just fine).
Your second paragraph reads like a budding TRIAC paragraph. Continue to work on developing those claim sentences so that they take a clear stance.
